My first exposure to this music was in an old b&w dance film which I also remember as being my first introduction to modern choreography. The piece was 3 Epitaphs by Paul Taylor, originally created in 1956. I wish I could find the film for you but even in these information rich times all I could find was some rather poor footage of a relatively recent re-staging, which I don’t intend to bother you with, and these photographs of another performance featuring the Robert Rauschenbergs designed costumes which, by themselves, cannot possibly give you any idea of how strong an effect the film, the choreography and the music had on me and how potent was the memory I held of it over many years.
